Last day in Portugal
We traveled by bus today from Finesterre, Spain to Porto, Portugal. We stopped once along the way in a fishing town-Viana-it was hot as blazes today and we were all thankful we weren't walking the Camino. Frankly, I thought every day was going to be very hot, so to only have one was a surprise and a blessing. In Viana we wandered in the old town and I purchased a piece of hand painted porcelain and Mom got some embroidered fabric and handmade lace. Many of us got pretty carsick today from the winding and narrow roads and very fast speeds so I mostly slept. Mom sat up in the single front seat by the driver so she could take pictures unobstructed- as she has most days- and got sunburned through the window!
We had a bus tour around Porto which is a beautiful, complicated city (which you'll see when I can finally post pictures) and then stopped at a port winery for a tour and tasting. I actually liked the ruby port! And the tawny port, too. I don't usually like wine and have not been drinking it on the trip. Went to the hotel to cool off a bit and then took off exploring with Mom and Kathy. We did a whirlwind shopping tour and among other things I got a lot of fado CDs. I'm ready to start learning it!!!
Farewell dinner this evening- it is amazing how we have bonded on this trip. That doesn't usually happen to me on travel tours, but because this one involved so much struggle for everyone I think it was different. I gave away some books and am going to have to leave some clothes, etc. behind in order to bring back all the treasures I bought!
So, Mom is up in the room packing and I'm in the lobby where the wifi is, and by the time I'm done with this, she'll be ready to help me pack. I can't decide about my walking stick- I'll have to carry it on and it will be unwieldy. But it was a big help... Guess we'll see.
So, off to pack and then back to the real world. Will arrive in Chicago at 2:00 tomorrow and then will sit there until almost 10 before our flit to ec leaves. Ug!!!!
So, goodbye Spain and Portugal. I am changed forever.
